The Hay Hotel: Songs and Stories of The Monto is a virtual walking tour combining the social history of Dublin’s historic red light district and the many songs inspired by its dark lanes and alleyways.
A collaboration between inner-city folklorist Terry Fagan and local folk singer Macdara Yeates, the expansive tour invites audiences on a comprehensive journey through the famed neighbourhood, with stories of; the ‘madams’ who ran the brothels like clockwork; the ‘poor unfortunates’ employed within them; and the many historical figures who roamed the streets, from Michael Collins to James Joyce. Along the way, Yeates will perform an array of songs and verse from the north inner city, some of them local ‘jeering’ songs collected from young children on the corners of Railway Street and Mabbot Lane, others composed by the nation’s finest literary exponents such as Oliver St. John Gogarty and Dominic Behan.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the special one-off event takes place on Zoom conference call software and streamed live on Facebook, where viewers will take the tour via Google Street View, stopping at key locations for songs and stories.
