John Sheahan & Colm Mac Con Iomaire
Saturday April 21st – The Abbey Theatre
MusicTown 18 is proud to present a meeting of two very special Irish musicians, John Sheahan and Colm Mac Con Iomaire, presenting a unique programme in the company of some special guests.
John Sheahan’s contribution to Irish music is enormous. Many will know him as the last living member of the great and gnarly ground-breaking 1960s balladeers The Dubliners, others as a poet (in 2015 he published his Fiddle Dreams collection), others as a classically-trained composer of such epochal titles as The Marino Waltz. Today John Sheahan glides around the contemporary Irish music scene spreading fiddle magic to younger musicians who aspire to a musical journey such as his.
As with John Sheahan, Colm Mac Con Iomaire was never just another skilled musician in a band. As a founding member of the influential experimental trad outfit Kíla, before becoming the founding member of The Frames with busking pal Glen Hansard, and also a member of the Swell Season, Colm has achieved that somewhat elusive magic trick of building a distinctive body of work all of his own. 2008’s The Hare’s Corner (Cúinne an Ghiorria) and 2015’s And Now the Weather (Agus Anois an Aimsir) are two albums of instrumental compositions which transcend his traditional music roots into something more singularly cinematic.
To many, these two figures might represent personalities of different eras, but their commonality is tangible; not just in their instruments of choice but the fact that they are both artists of extreme grace and zenic composure.
